Something long awaited is finally beginning…
There are moments that arrive quietly, after a long period of waiting - ones that almost begin to feel imagined, until suddenly, they are just around the corner.
Some of you may remember, back in 2023, I shared a little call for votes - for an opportunity with Sophie Tea’s Brewing project. If you were one of those who voted for me, thank you so much - I was, and still am, incredibly grateful for your support, and it makes this moment feel all the more special.
What once felt like a distant possibility has stayed gently in the background ever since. Originally set to take place in Australia, it shifted and reshaped with time - and now, at last, its moment has arrived.
This April, I’ll be spending two weeks in London as part of this residency, alongside three other artists from across the world. We’ll be working side by side in a shared studio - creating, exchanging, and allowing something entirely new to unfold.
I’ll be joining Loepy Thissen (Netherlands), Karley McIlwaine (Canada), and Holly Garbett (London), while missing the talented Monica Esquivel (Mexico) on this occasion.
It feels quite different to anything I’ve done before - and quite possibly anything I ever will do again.
I often think about how deeply place influences what we create. My work is rooted in space, nature, and the shifting moments of the Lake District - the familiar paths, the quiet observations gathered over time outdoors. So I find myself wondering what might emerge when I step away from that landscape, even just briefly, and create from memory, feeling, and instinct within the ever-moving city.
Perhaps the work will carry echoes of home - memories, colours, and feelings held quietly beneath the surface. Or perhaps something more unexpected will rise - something with a different energy, a touch more intensity, a new rhythm altogether. There is something very special in not knowing.
It feels like a rare and fleeting moment - one where the usual boundaries soften, and something new is free to take shape.
I’m stepping into it with a sense of curiosity and excitement, and I can’t wait to share what unfolds with you when I return. Until then, I’ll be sharing glimpses along the way on social media, as everything begins to take shape.
With warmth,
Charlotte
